Launching a rocket

Please refer to the following frequently asked questions, as they may answer some questions you have about Khalsa Engineering Academy.

What is a free school?

Free schools are independent, state-funded schools. They have the same legal status as academies.

Will free schools be able to make a profit?

No. Free schools can only be set up and owned by charities. The school will be run by the Headteacher and their leadership team and they will be answerable to a Board of Governors.

Why are you proposing to open with only Reception classes?

Admissions to the school are taking place where demand for places has been identified.

Are free schools selective?

No. Free schools have to follow the new admissions code like all state-funded schools.

If Khalsa Engineering Academy opens in Bradford will that mean less money for the other schools in the area?

No. Funding for free schools will be equivalent to the funding of maintained schools and academies in the same local authority area. The opening of a free school does not mean that the overall funding available in an area goes down. However, the total funding an individual school receives will depend on the number of pupils attending.

Will Khalsa Engineering Academy be inspected by Ofsted?

Yes. All free schools are subject to inspection in the same way as other academy category schools.

Have you chosen a Headteacher for Khalsa Engineering Academy?

Not yet. We are looking for a high-calibre leader to take on this opportunity and will be advertising nationally to make sure we get the best candidates to apply. We hope to be able to appoint our Headteacher to start in Easter 2015 but will not rush such a critical decision.

How will the school be accountable?

The school will be run by a Board of Governors who will be accountable to the charitable trust which oversees the school. In addition the school will also be accountable to the Department for Education through the terms of its Funding Agreement.

How can I apply for a place?

Details of the admissions procedure are available here.

Does my family need to be religious to attend Khalsa Engineering Academy?

Not at all. Khalsa Engineering Academy is not a faith school and people from all backgrounds and beliefs are welcome. What Khalsa Engineering Academy does is to promote the core Sikh values of honesty, respect for our planet and community service. We believe this will give our pupils the foundations to become responsible, caring, confident and well-rounded individuals. Our pupils learn to understand and respect different views and faiths. We do not promote any belief system above another.

When will the school be moving to a permanent site and where will it be?

Our proposed site is at the former Newlands Community Centre on Fagley Road. The Education Funding Agency have acquired this site on our behalf and we are currently looking at options for our new building which will include community access.

Does the school offer transport in the mornings and afternoons?

Khalsa Engineering Academy work closely with an outside charitable group, Khalsa Foundation, to help parents who have difficulty in transporting their child to school. If you would like to enquire about your transport possibilities then please email transport@khalsafoundation.com with your transport requirements and they will endeavour to find a possible solution.
